Triple Threat: Iran-Backed Forces Block Saudi Oil Routes
Saudi Arabia's oil transport network is facing unprecedented disruptions as Houthi rebels in Yemen and Iranian-backed forces launch a three-pronged offensive on key routes. The East-West pipeline, which connects Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, has been suspended following drone attacks from Iraq.
The pipeline, stretching over 1,200 kilometers, is crucial for transporting around 5 million barrels of crude oil per day - approximately 4-5% of global supplies. However, with the East-West pipeline blocked and Iran's blockade on the Strait of Hormuz still in place, Saudi Arabia's capacity to export oil has been severely constrained.
The situation has led to a significant spike in international crude oil prices, reaching $110 per barrel at one point. The Houthi rebels' capture of strategic points in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and reports of Iranian direct involvement have raised concerns about further escalation in the region.
