Trump Announces $200 Billion South Korean Investment in US Energy Infrastructure
US President Donald Trump announced a major investment package from South Korea worth up to $200 billion, as part of their trade agreement. The package includes several energy infrastructure projects in Texas and Alaska. A natural-gas-fired power plant is being built in Encinal, Texas for $22.3 billion, with commercial operations expected to start in 2029.
The South Korean government claims the facility will supply electricity directly to artificial intelligence data centers. Additionally, up to eight nuclear reactors are planned in the US, costing a total of $120 billion. A South Korean investment is also being evaluated for the Alaska LNG project, which includes building a gas pipeline and terminal to export liquefied natural gas.
According to Reuters, the Alaska LNG project aims to produce up to 20 million metric tons of LNG per year for Asian markets. The total package represents one of the first concrete steps towards South Korea's commitment to invest $350 billion in the US. Of this total, $150 billion is earmarked for cooperation in shipbuilding and $200 billion for strategic investments.
