Trump-Backed Gas Plant Sparks Fears of Energy Market Disruption
A massive gas power plant backed by US President Donald Trump's administration is set to flood the Ohio region with electricity, but it also poses significant risks for other energy projects in the area.
The proposed project, which would be the largest power plant in the US, has sparked concerns among industry representatives that it could crowd out private sector capital and imperil other projects. The facility, expected to cost around $33 billion, would have a nameplate capacity of 9.2 gigawatts, more than nine times the size of most modern natural gas-fired power plants in the country.
The Trump administration's plan is part of its efforts to meet growing energy demands and keep consumers' prices low. However, analysts warn that the project could exacerbate uncertainty for grid operators like PJM Interconnection LLC, which is already dealing with a potential supply shortage as soon as next year.
