Trump Backs India-Middle East Corridor to Counter Iranian Oil Grip
US President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind the India-Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC), calling it a way to divert Middle Eastern oil away from chokepoints under Iran's control.
The IMEC is a multi-modal connectivity and infrastructure initiative that aims to boost trade, sustainability, and connectivity across South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Trump voiced his support for the corridor in a speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, saying it would help shift energy infrastructure away from Iranian checkpoints.
'Iran's terrorist attacks on commercial shipping have shown the need to shift Middle East energy infrastructure,' Trump said. 'That is why my administration strongly supports the India-Middle East Economic Corridor and other places, to get oil out.'
