Trump Endorses IMEC as Alternative to Iranian Energy Routes
US President Donald Trump has expressed strong support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), stating that it will help shift energy infrastructure away from Iranian-controlled routes. Speaking at a multilateral meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Trump emphasized the need to move Middle East energy infrastructure away from Iran due to its 'terrorist attacks on commercial shipping in neighboring countries.'
Trump noted that his administration strongly supports IMEC and other initiatives to facilitate oil transport, stating that together they are 'on the verge of overcoming challenges that have plagued this region for a decade.'
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor is an ambitious multinational initiative aimed at strengthening trade, connectivity, and energy security between Asia, the Gulf, and Europe. The proposed corridor includes an eastern route connecting India with the Gulf and a northern route connecting the Gulf with Europe.
Trump also warned Iran of 'annihilation,' echoing his earlier remarks at the UN General Assembly. He stated that the US had isolated Iran financially and would continue to exert pressure until it does 'the right thing.'
