Trump Floats Idea of US Staying in Iran for Oil Control
US President Donald Trump suggested that the country could maintain its presence in Iran and retain control of the nation's oil reserves. Speaking at a golf course in Ireland on September 13, Trump stated that the US could 'stay in Iran' and 'keep the oil,' drawing parallels with Venezuela. He claimed that revenue generated from Venezuela has 'paid for the war many times.'
The comments come as tensions between the US and Iran persist, affecting global oil markets and driving up gas prices. The average national price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $4.31 on September 13, according to AAA.
Trump's remarks also touched on the recent agreement between the US and private businesses to secure majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's proven oil reserves. While Trump did not provide details about a potential deal with Iran, he acknowledged that negotiations are ongoing, stating that 'Iran wants to make a deal so bad. They are calling constantly.'
However, Iranian officials have denied claims of active negotiations with the US.
