Trump Rejects Iran Deal to Reopen Hormuz
US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, dampening hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough. The move comes as tensions in the region remain high, with Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels continuing their attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The Iranian proposal, which was conveyed through Qatari mediators, called for hostilities to stop across the region, including in Lebanon. In return, Washington would have had to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian funds, and waive oil sanctions.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the proposal would set a seven-day timetable, with the strait reopening on the sixth or seventh day and nuclear talks starting thereafter. However, Trump rejected the offer, telling reporters outside the White House that 'They made a proposal, but I rejected it.'
