Trump Rejects Iranian Peace Proposal, Citing Skepticism Over US Demands

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and halt regional fighting within seven days, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. The Iranian plan, conveyed through Qatari mediators, would trigger a seven-day countdown to reopening the strait and a pause in hostilities, but Trump is reportedly skeptical that Iran will meet his demands.

The Strait of Hormuz has been at the center of a seven-month-old conflict between the US, Iran, and their allies. The proposal comes after previous attempts at diplomacy have failed to end the war, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes. If the US were to agree, the warring parties could start wider talks 'on mutually agreed subjects,' said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and hostilities would end on all fronts, including Lebanon. The plan requires the United States to lift its blockade on Iranian ports, release Iran’s frozen funds, and waive its oil sanctions. Trump has told his staff that he sees a renewed bombing campaign as likely, according to the Journal report.
