Trump Rejects Iran's Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within seven days has been rejected by US President Donald Trump. The rejection came despite Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi saying that an agreement could still be reached if 'necessary conditions' were met.
According to Araghchi, Iran's conditions for reopening the waterway are the same as those contained in a memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran in June. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route, with around a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies normally passing through it.
Trump dismissed the proposal, saying that Iran was 'losing so badly' and wanted a deal to reopen the waterway because of its own losses. He also claimed that the US already had 'total control' of the strait, with 'massive amounts of oil' continuing to pass through it.
