US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, dealing a blow to hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough that could ease global energy flows.
The proposal, which was made through Qatari mediators, called for hostilities to stop across the region, including in Lebanon, in exchange for Washington lifting its naval blockade of Iranian ports, easing oil sanctions, and agreeing to a ceasefire. However, Trump said he had rejected the offer, citing concerns that Iran would not meet his demands.
The rejection comes as tensions around Saudi Arabia remain elevated, with Yemen's Houthi rebels launching another salvo towards Riyadh on Saturday. The attacks have disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route, and spread across the region.
