Trump Rejects Iran's Strait of Hormuz Truce Offer
Oil prices surged after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which would ease a crippling supply crisis and lower costs worldwide.
The waterway is crucial for global energy supplies, and its closure has led to increased tensions between the US and Iran. Tehran proposed a seven-day truce that would see the strait reopened in exchange for the release of frozen assets, lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade.
However, Trump rejected the proposal, stating that 'they overplayed their hand.' Despite this, he expressed hope that negotiations could resume. Oil prices had fallen by more than 2% on Friday after news of the offer broke, but bounced back at the start of the week, with Brent crude rising above $106 a barrel.
The price spike stoked inflation concerns and weighed on stock markets, with Asian equities softer and bond yields climbing. The focus is now on the Federal Reserve ahead of its next policy meeting in October, where policymakers will assess the impact of rising prices on interest rates.
