Trump Seeks Xi Support in Bid to Cut Off Iran's Lifeline
The war between the US and Iran has been ongoing for six months, but the Islamic Republic is still projecting defiance despite its economy being severely affected by sanctions.
Iran's regional ambitions are not diminishing, with its Houthi allies seizing control of key strategic locations such as Mokha, a Yemeni port, and advancing towards the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The US is seeking to reduce China's economic support for Iran, which is critical in keeping the regime afloat. The two countries are set to meet on September 24, with President Trump hoping to persuade Xi Jinping to agree to a reduction in Chinese purchases of Iranian oil.
According to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, China accounts for around 90% of Iran's oil exports. By reducing its support for Iran, China would not only help to weaken the regime but also safeguard its own economic interests, as a prolonged conflict in the region could disrupt the flow of vital energy supplies.
