Trump Signals Further Talks with Iran as Diplomatic Efforts Gain Momentum
The US-Iran standoff has entered a new diplomatic phase after President Trump signaled further talks with Iran, despite his previous rejection of Tehran's proposal. According to Iranian officials, the conflict, which has killed thousands and disrupted global energy markets, is expected to center on a revised version of a seven-day plan put forward by Tehran last week.
The plan, which was presented during the UN General Assembly, envisages an end to all hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the unfreezing of billions of dollars' worth of Iranian assets, and the lifting of US sanctions on Iranian oil. In return, Iran would allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for oil tankers.
Trump told reporters at the White House that US officials had spoken with mediators on Monday, but provided no further details. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country expected to receive the US response to its latest ceasefire proposals and conditions for restoring passage of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
