Trump Threatens Higher Costs for South Korea's Alaska LNG Investment
US President Donald Trump has made a veiled threat to South Korea regarding its investment in the Alaska LNG project. Speaking at the White House, Trump stated that if South Korea does not agree to invest in the project, he will 'charge' them more. The project involves constructing a pipeline from Alaska's North Slope to southern Alaska, transporting natural gas to be cooled into liquid form for shipment to Asian markets.
The package of US investment projects unveiled by Trump includes the Alaska LNG project, as well as construction of a gas-fired power plant in Texas and eight large-scale nuclear power plants. South Korea has not yet finalized its decision on participating in the project, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Trump emphasized that he did not 'jump the gun' by including the Alaska LNG project in the package, as South Korean representatives were present during negotiations. However, if South Korea does not sign the agreement shortly, Trump threatened to 'double it up.'
