Trump Threatens Higher Costs if South Korea Backs Out of Alaska LNG Project
US President Donald Trump has threatened to charge South Korea more if it doesn't agree to invest in an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The project involves building a pipeline from the North Slope to southern Alaska, which will transport natural gas cooled into liquid form for shipments to Asia.
Trump made these remarks during a press availability at the White House on Friday, two days after unveiling the first package of South Korea's US investment projects under last year's bilateral trade deal. The project also includes the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Texas and eight large-scale nuclear power plants.
According to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, South Korea will invest over $50 billion in the Alaska project. However, Seoul has not yet finalized its decision on whether to participate.
