Trump Threatens Kharg Island Amid Escalating US-Iran Tensions
US-Iran tensions escalated over the weekend as President Donald Trump threatened to target Kharg Island, which handles about 80% of Iran's oil exports. This comes after a series of strikes between the two nations.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said they targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, claiming that Iranian forces were preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins stated that 'U.S. forces are monitoring the area closely and remain prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through this essential waterway.'
Trump then shared an AI-made video showing Kharg Island being destroyed, claiming it was 'being blown to smithereens.' Iran responded by launching missiles at US bases in Jordan, which they said were targeting technical infrastructure and enemy fighter deployment sites.
The Iranian foreign ministry also stated that the US bears 'full responsibility' for the escalation, following initial strikes. This comes as the US has been enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports, leading to a sharp decline in exports. Data from Kpler shows that Iran's oil exports have plummeted over 80% compared to the same month last year.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to impose secondary sanctions on those 'enabling' Iran to maintain its economic activity. He also stated that another bank would be sanctioned this week, intensifying economic pressure on Tehran.
