Trump Threatens South Korea Over LNG Project Investment
US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to South Korea over its participation in a $54 billion liquefied natural gas export project in Alaska.
The project, which is being developed by private company Glenfarne Group, was presented as a key part of South Korea's commitments to invest in the US under a trade agreement.
However, Seoul has expressed concerns that the project may not be economically viable and has refused to commit to investing unless it meets certain conditions.
In response, Trump threatened to impose higher tariffs on South Korean goods if the country does not participate in the project. However, it is unclear whether he has the authority to unilaterally raise tariffs in this manner, as a recent Supreme Court ruling limited his tariff powers.
