Trump to Unveil $54 Billion Korea Investment in Alaska LNG Project
US President Donald Trump is set to announce a $54 billion investment in the Alaska LNG development project by the Republic of Korea (ROK) at the White House on September 30. This investment is part of the ROK's $350 billion strategic investment package signed with the Trump administration last November, which includes $150 billion for US shipbuilding projects.
The ROK government has classified the Alaska LNG project as a matter for further consultation, but if President Trump's announcement contains substantial details that differ from this position, controversy over the project's profitability and other issues is likely to intensify.
The project envisions constructing a pipeline to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the North Slope in northern Alaska to a liquefaction facility in Nikiski on the southern coast. The LNG would then be loaded onto ships at the Port of Nikiski and exported to Asian markets, including the ROK, Japan, and Taiwan.
