Trump Touts $54 Billion Alaska Gas Project Amid Election Uncertainty
President Donald Trump announced in the Oval Office that South Korea plans to invest around $54 billion in a natural gas project in Alaska. The project, an 807-mile pipeline connecting Alaska's North Slope to a liquefied natural gas export terminal, is described by Trump and Alaskan Senator Dan Sullivan as a done deal.
However, South Korean officials were more cautious, stating that they need to assess the project's commercial viability before committing to the investment. 'We will decide whether to invest in the Alaska LNG project only after thoroughly reviewing it in accordance with our domestic legal procedures and based on the principle of commercial viability,' said Han Jeoungae, secretary-general of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's liberal Democratic Party.
This announcement is part of Trump's efforts to boost Senate candidates in states where Republicans are facing competitive races. Trump has made similar announcements about big projects in Iowa and Texas, aiming to elevate Republican chances in the November midterm elections.
