Trump Touts Korean Investment in Alaska LNG Amid Midterm Election Push
US President Donald Trump is set to announce plans for South Korea's $54 billion strategic investment package, which includes funding for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Alaska and several other major US projects.
The move aims to bolster the administration's economic record ahead of November's midterm elections. The Alaska LNG project would transport natural gas from the North Slope to a liquefaction facility on the state's southern coast, where it could be shipped to Asian markets.
A South Korean opposition lawmaker expressed concerns about the commercial viability and profitability of US investment projects, stating that the National Assembly would closely examine the issue. Analysts in Seoul have also questioned the fairness of the deal, suggesting that Korea would bear the costs but share profits with the US.
