Trump Touts Potential $54 Billion Korean Investment in Alaska LNG Project
US President Donald Trump is set to announce a potential $54 billion investment in an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, despite Seoul's unresolved concerns over its commercial viability.
The project, which involves building a roughly 1,300-kilometer pipeline from the North Slope to the ice-free port of Nikiski near Anchorage for liquefaction and export, has been left open for further negotiations with Washington.
Korea pledged last year to invest $350 billion in the United States, including $150 billion in shipbuilding and $200 billion in strategic sectors. However, Seoul has named a $22.3 billion combined-cycle gas power plant project in Texas as the first project under its investment package, leaving the Alaska LNG project for later negotiations.
The Korean government is still analyzing whether the Alaska LNG project makes commercial sense, citing high costs and securing steady LNG buyers for years to come as major hurdles.
