Trump Turns to Economic Pressure as Iran Hardens Stance Over Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump has shifted his approach to dealing with Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, opting for economic pressure over military strikes. In an interview with Axios, Trump revealed that he is prepared to wait for economic distress to mount in Iran rather than launching further military action.
The Iranian government has set out sweeping demands to their American counterparts for reopening the strait, including reparation payments, the end of fighting in Lebanon, and the lifting of the US naval blockade. Tehran's conditions also include withdrawing American troops from the region and releasing frozen Iranian assets.
Iranian officials have confirmed that their position is that the US must meet all of these conditions before negotiations can resume. The situation has led to a significant increase in oil prices, with Brent crude futures jumping 1.1% to $84.45 a barrel on Monday.
