US President Donald Trump has vowed to hit Iran hard after a tit-for-tat exchange of fire, but Tehran dismissed his claim that American forces had struck the country's main oil export terminal.

A US official confirmed that Washington had launched missiles at two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, where Washington said it had targeted Iranian launchers firing mines into the waterway.

Iran responded with its own missile attack on a US airbase in Jordan, but a senior Iranian source told Reuters the exchange was 'limited and contained', and Tehran would retaliate harshly if attacked again.
