Trump Warns South Korea Over Alaska LNG Project
US President Donald Trump has warned South Korea that it will be charged more if it doesn't agree to invest in an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The project, which involves a 1,298-kilometre-long pipeline from the North Slope to southern Alaska, is part of the US-Korea bilateral trade deal unveiled last year.
During a White House press availability, Trump stated that South Korea had initially agreed to participate in the project and that he would charge them more if they backed out. He also mentioned that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had said that South Korea would invest over $50 billion in the Alaska project.
The US President's comments come as a response to Seoul's decision not to finalize its participation in the project yet, according to Yonhap news agency. Trump's statement has raised concerns about the potential implications of his words for the future of the bilateral trade deal and South Korea's involvement in the Alaska LNG project.
