Trump-Xi Meeting Brings Complex Issues to the Fore
President Donald Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on September 24, amidst strained relations between the two countries over trade, technology restrictions, and security issues.
The meeting comes as tensions remain high over tariffs, with the U.S. Treasury Department stating that China purchases approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports, with independent Chinese refineries accounting for most of those imports in April.
China's economic leverage with Iran is significant, but it remains to be seen whether Beijing will use this leverage to pressure Tehran as the U.S. and Iran remain at odds over various issues.
The U.S.-China relationship is also complicated by disagreements over Taiwan, with China considering Taiwan part of its territory and pressing the United States to take a harder line against what Beijing describes as support for Taiwanese independence.
