The US has been pushing China to pressure Iran due to its significant economic leverage with the country. According to the US Treasury Department, China purchases approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports, with independent Chinese refineries accounting for most of those imports.
Taiwan is another major point of contention between the two countries. The US has a longstanding 'one China' policy, but also maintains an unofficial relationship with Taiwan and provides defense articles to help the island maintain its self-defense capability.
The meeting comes at a time when tensions between the US and China are high due to disagreements over trade, technology restrictions, and security issues. The two countries are also engaged in an AI arms race, competing for access to advanced semiconductors, technology transfers, and regulation.
