'Trumpflation' Sends BBQ Prices Soaring: UK Families Feel the Heat
The price of a family BBQ has skyrocketed in the UK over the past five years, according to a report by the Liberal Democrats. A meal consisting of burgers, sausages, and corn on the cob for a family of four increased from £14.28 at Tesco and £12.69 at Waitrose in 2021 to £21.14 at Tesco and £17.41 at Waitrose, representing an average increase of 43%. The price rise was partly blamed on 'Trumpflation', a term used to describe the global cost increases due to the war between the US and Iran under former President Donald Trump.
A pack of four burgers from Tesco increased in price by 83%, while a pack of ten slices of cheese rose by 63%. The price of two corn on the cob at Waitrose was up by 55% over the same period. The Liberal Democrats have called for a Good Food Bill to set long-term targets for food security, production, and affordability.
The party's Treasury spokesman, Daisy Cooper, said: 'Families will also be feeling the heat when it comes to their finances this summer.' She claimed that many households would struggle with the rising cost of living and soaring bills. The Liberal Democrats have been pushing the government to cut fuel duty and implement a long-term plan to help British farmers.
