Trump's Energy Claims Don't Add Up

President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States does not need Canadian energy. However, a closer look at the numbers reveals a different story. In 2025, Canada supplied 63.4% of all crude oil imported by the US, as well as nearly 100% of America's imported natural gas and 97.9% of its imported natural gas liquids.

Canadian suppliers also accounted for almost one-quarter of the refined petroleum products imported into the United States. The total value of Canadian energy exports to the US was approximately C$157.5 billion that year, which is not a marginal purchase that can be easily replaced.

Trump's argument that rising American oil production eliminates the need for Canadian crude overlooks the fact that not all crude oil is interchangeable. Much of the oil produced in Western Canada is heavier and contains more sulphur than the light and sweet oil produced from American shale formations.
