Trump's 'Energy Emergency' Fast-Tracks Massive LNG Expansion in Louisiana

The Plaquemines LNG export terminal in Louisiana is seeking a massive expansion under the Trump administration's 'national energy emergency' permitting process. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted the terminal fast-tracked permitting, cutting the public comment period from 30 days to just 10. The expansion would make the facility the largest LNG export terminal in North America, increasing its production capacity by over 50%.

The $18 billion project could damage up to 470 acres of wetlands and water bottoms in central Plaquemines Parish, an area already suffering from rapid land loss due to subsidence, sea level rise, and erosion. Environmentalists warn that the expedited review could reduce scrutiny of dredging, in-water construction, and the filling of marshlands.

Plaquemines LNG is one of Louisiana's largest industrial facilities, with significant greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change. The terminal's expansion would increase its production capacity from 1.4 trillion cubic feet of gas per year to around 2.3 trillion, with at least 9 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.

Some Louisiana leaders welcome the expansion, citing economic benefits and job creation. However, critics argue that shipping natural gas abroad contradicts President Trump's stated rationale for declaring an energy emergency: boosting domestic energy independence and reliability.
