Trump's Hormuz Map Reignites Tensions Ahead of US Midterm Elections

US President Donald Trump has reignited tensions in the Middle East by posting a map of the Strait of Hormuz on his Truth Social platform, labeling it as 'Trump Strait'. This move follows his rejection of an Iranian proposal to reopen the critical waterway and restart nuclear negotiations. The seven-day framework proposed by Tehran required Washington to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waive sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and respect a ceasefire in Lebanon.

The US has maintained a blockade of Iranian ports since the escalation of tensions between the two nations. Trump had previously expressed support for designating the Strait of Hormuz as US territory, stating that Washington effectively managed the strait through its ongoing blockade. The Strait of Hormuz is a key strategic leverage point for Iran in its standoff with the US, with approximately one-fifth of globally traded oil and gas transiting through the waterway.

Iran's latest proposal directly conditioned the reopening of the shipping lane on the removal of the US naval blockade, comprehensive sanctions relief, and re-establishment of diplomatic engagement concerning Tehran's nuclear programme. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that normal maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz could be restored within seven days if Washington agreed to Tehran's conditions.
