Trump's Iran Blockade Sabotages Gas Price Goals
The Trump administration is struggling to balance its Iran strategy with its goal of keeping gasoline prices low. As the war with Iran continues and the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, oil prices remain high, making it difficult for the US to achieve its objective.
Washington has committed to releasing 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in response to the disruption. However, crude oil stocks in the SPR have fallen to their lowest levels since January 1983, and the reserve is now below 300 million barrels for the first time since it was filled in the early 1980s.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has stated that the US could maintain its naval blockade of Iran 'indefinitely' by rotating ships in and out. This would keep pressure on oil prices, making it challenging for the administration to bring down gasoline prices ahead of the midterm elections.
