Trump's Iran Rejection Sparks Oil Price Surge, Stocks Plummet
Oil prices have surged to over $101 per barrel after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iran peace proposal, escalating tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude has reached a new high of $98.92 per barrel, contributing to a decline of 0.4% in the S&P 500 and 0.5% in both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq composite.
The increase in oil prices has also had a ripple effect on other markets, with gold plummeting by 3.1% to $4,155.67 per ounce and silver falling by 4.6% to $61.32 per ounce. Giovanni Staunovo of UBS attributed the weakness in gold to higher oil prices and the increased probability of further US rate hikes.
Analysts predict that this trend will continue, with Lawrence Gillum of LPL Financial stating that upward pressure on bond yields is likely as long as the Iran conflict uncertainty persists. This, in turn, may lead to future inflation reports being influenced by higher oil prices.
