Trump's Iran U-Turn Sparks Global Market Rout
The sudden announcement by President Trump to resume talks with Iran has sent shockwaves through the global markets, causing oil and grain prices to plummet. Yesterday, September Brent crude futures dropped a staggering 10.2% to $88/barrel, marking a -15.9% decline over two sessions. This sharp collapse in oil prices led to a significant decrease in grain prices, as traders booked profits after a speculative rally last week on fears of a Russian grain export ban that failed to materialize.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has directly denied any information suggesting the country had appealed to the US to resume negotiations, stating they will continue to defend their sovereignty 'by all available means'. One such measure is blocking the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea with the help of the Yemeni Houthis, which would block oil exports from the region and put pressure on Trump by increasing world oil prices.
As a result of falling energy prices, the biofuel sector has come under pressure, leading to a sell-off in agricultural futures. Corn ethanol and soybean biodiesel have been particularly affected, with futures on the Chicago Board of Trade plummeting 2.1%, 3.4%, and 2.9% respectively.
