Trump's Truth Social Sells Access to President's Market-Moving Posts
A new service offered by Donald Trump's Truth Social platform allows financial institutions to access influential posts from the US president and other notable accounts at a faster pace. The direct data feed, called Truth API, is available for a subscription fee of up to $US100,000 per month.
The service aims to provide traders with a head start on market-moving announcements, including those related to tariffs, military action, energy policy, and central bank leadership. These posts can move shares, currencies, bonds, oil, and other commodity markets.
For example, if the president announces a new biofuel mandate that increases demand for corn, traders with access to Truth API can act on this information almost immediately. This can result in significant profits, as even a small price increase of $A10 per tonne on 100,000 tonnes of corn would be worth $A1 million.
The arrangement has raised concerns about the potential for insider trading and the fairness of allowing wealthy traders to access government policy announcements before they are publicly available. While Truth Social argues that its posts are released simultaneously to paying traders and the public, critics argue that the timing of this release can still matter in high-speed markets.
