Trump's War with Iran Drives Gas Prices to Record High Over Labor Day Weekend
Gas prices are expected to hit a record high over Labor Day weekend, with an estimated $4.03 per gallon. This surpasses the previous record of $3.83 per gallon in 2012 and is driven by President Donald Trump's war with Iran. The conflict has disrupted global oil markets, leading to higher costs for consumers.
The national average gas price hit a peak of $4.08 a gallon on Monday, according to the AAA index. Consumers have paid an additional $59 billion more in gas expenses from February 28 through May compared to the same period last year, estimated by a Moody's economist. Trump has stated that paying more for gas is the cost of restraining Iran and preventing them from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
The volatility of gas prices due to geopolitical tensions may affect voters' opinions on the issues, particularly during the upcoming midterms. GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, noted that motorists have faced 'constant ups and downs at the pump' this year, which may lead to relief if tensions ease.
