Turkey and UN Broker New Talks on Russia-Ukraine Black Sea Truce
Efforts to secure a Black Sea ceasefire are gaining momentum as Turkey and the United Nations host fresh talks between Russia and Ukraine. The initiative, set to take place in early October, aims to replicate a successful 2022 push that ensured the safe passage of grain shipments from Ukrainian ports.
The deal fell apart last year, but with global food prices surging due to escalating attacks on each other's Black Sea port facilities, countries are scrambling for a solution. Russia and Ukraine make up more than a quarter of the world's wheat shipments, and the assaults have pushed wheat futures to a three-year high in August.
Turkey and the UN bring credibility to the campaign, having steered the 2022 ceasefire that secured grain, fertilizer, and food passage from Ukrainian ports. A closed-door meeting during the UN General Assembly in late September kicked off the diplomatic initiative, which involves free commercial navigation and port protection.
