Turkey's Gas Dilemma: US Pressure Threatens Iran Ties
The United States has set its sights on isolating Iran economically, which could have significant consequences for Turkey. According to Bloomberg, Ankara may lose one of its largest natural gas suppliers, as approximately 13% of Turkey's gas imports come from Iran.
This translates to around 7.7 billion cubic meters per year. The risk of sanctions threatens to sever ties with Tehran, leaving Turkey facing a difficult decision: maintain supplies from Iran and risk conflict with Washington or seek alternative sources.
Gazprom could potentially compensate for these losses, but Turkey's negotiating position may be compromised as it continues to try to reduce Russian gas prices. The current high gas prices make the supply of blue fuel even more expensive, adding to Turkey's economic woes.
