U.S. Stocks Fall Amid Geopolitical Risks, Oil Price Surge
U.S. stocks fell on August 10, marking an end to their winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 53,975.98, down 60.95 points or 0.11% from the previous session.
The sharp spike in crude oil futures was fueled by heightened geopolitical risks in the Middle East, specifically a Yemeni rebel attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's statement that Iran would not renegotiate the nuclear deal until the U.S. resolves its violations and provides compensation.
Oil prices surged over 5% at one point during the session, reigniting fears of persistent inflation and causing long-term U.S. Treasury yields to rise.
This led to a decline in stocks as investors took profit and adjusted their positions amid historically elevated stock prices.
