UAE Breaks Away from Saudi-Led OPEC, Asserting Greater Autonomy in Oil Governance

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has left OPEC and OPEC+, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in the Gulf region. The decision, announced on Tuesday, is seen as a strategic break with Saudi-led oil governance, driven by years of divergence over conflicts in Yemen and Sudan, energy quotas, and competing visions of the Gulf order.

According to Gulf sources, the UAE's move will allow it to assert direct control over its spare oil capacity, stripping away assumptions that Gulf energy policy remains anchored in Riyadh or bound to Saudi primacy. This shift is partly driven by regional instability, particularly the US-Israeli war against Iran, which has heightened economic pressure on the UAE.

Analysts and experts agree that the decision goes beyond a dispute over OPEC oil output quotas and represents a deeper rupture in ties between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. 'There is something seriously happening in the Saudi-UAE relationship...a much more serious rift than we think,' said Fawaz Gerges of the London School of Economics.

The UAE's decision has been met with caution from Riyadh, which reiterated a statement on Tuesday that the move was carefully considered and followed a comprehensive review of production policy. However, Gulf sources suggest that this is just a sign of deeper divisions within the region.
