Uganda-Denmark Talks Focus on Oil Spill Preparedness Ahead of Commercial Production

Uganda's Ambassador to Denmark, Margaret M. Otteskov, led discussions on oil spill preparedness and environmental response in Copenhagen. The talks focused on strengthening Uganda's capacity to prevent and respond to oil spills on Lake Victoria as the country advances its oil and gas programme.

The discussions were part of wider engagements between Uganda and Denmark aimed at strengthening bilateral relations through investment and development partnerships. Uganda is seeking to strengthen its preparedness to prevent and respond to oil spills on Lake Victoria, a critical resource for the country that supports fishing, transport, water supply, and other economic activities.

The National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCP) was launched in 2022 by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, providing a framework for national preparedness and response in the event of an oil spill. The plan divides the response system into three tiers depending on the scale and potential impact of a spill.
