UK Backs Saudi Arabia with Air-to-Air Refuelling Support in Yemen Conflict
The UK government announced this week that it will provide Saudi Arabia with military support in its ongoing conflict with Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group.
According to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the UK has accepted a request from Riyadh for 'defensive air-to-air refuelling', which involves deploying one Royal Air Force Voyager tanker aircraft to assist with this task in the coming days.
The move is seen as an effort by London to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region, particularly in maintaining open oil export routes. Burnham stated that the arrangement would be 'time-limited' and kept under review.
Experts say the UK's support carries more political weight than military significance, with Chris Doyle from the Council for Arab-British Understanding arguing that what matters most for Saudi Arabia is having visible international backing as it confronts the Houthis.
