UK Deploys Air Refuelling Support for Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Escalation

Britain has agreed to provide Saudi Arabia with defensive air-to-air refuelling support for a limited period, following a request from Riyadh amid intensified Houthi attacks on the kingdom. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he approved the request on the advice of the defence and foreign secretaries.

The UK will deploy one Royal Air Force Voyager tanker aircraft in the coming days to support Saudi aircraft defending against drone and missile attacks, but not for strikes against the Houthis. This move is part of a broader effort by Britain to protect its interests and those of the wider region, citing the risk of further disruption and the need to keep oil routes open.

The new mission will operate alongside the UK's existing deployment of its Sky Sabre air defence system to Saudi Arabia, which was deployed earlier this year to help protect the kingdom from Iranian missile attacks. Britain is also supporting efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, a major maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The Houthis have intensified their attacks on Saudi territory and oil infrastructure, and their advances along Yemen's Red Sea coast have heightened concerns over security around Bab al-Mandab. This has increased pressure on regional energy flows, particularly for Saudi Arabia, which relies heavily on oil exports.
