UK Energy Bills Set to Soar as Gas Prices Hit Four-Year High

UK households are facing a potential surge in energy bills this winter due to rising gas prices. The wholesale cost of natural gas has reached a four-year high, with prices increasing by around 3% in recent days.

According to Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, the current price level is the highest since December 2022. He warns that this could lead to a 'brutal' increase in energy bills for households already struggling with high costs.

The Ofgem price cap for January will be calculated based on these high prices, which could result in an additional 13% rise in energy bills for some households. Those who use heating oil or are connected to heat networks and not covered by the price cap may see increases even sooner.
