UK Gas Boiler Users Labeled National Security Threat

Over 25 million UK households with gas-powered boilers have been identified as an 'Achilles heel' in the country's national security, according to a recent report by climate change thinktank E3G. The report claims that these homes are a strategic vulnerability due to their reliance on natural gas and inefficient heating systems.

The UK's housing stock is predominantly reliant on gas boilers, with 85% of its approximately 30 million homes using them for heating. This collective consumption accounts for more than one-third of all gas used in the UK annually, with roughly half of this gas being imported.

Experts warn that this structural reliance on gas makes the country susceptible to supply disruptions and price volatility, exacerbated by inefficient homes requiring more gas to keep occupants warm. The report cites the surge in energy prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 as a recent example of Britain's vulnerability in its 'Achilles heel.'

The authors of the report recommend that the government launch a 'home front mission' to radically change how British energy needs are met, acknowledging the significant impacts on individual households and people's sense of financial agency.
