UK Offers Military Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that Britain will provide limited military support to Saudi Arabia in response to attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The agreement, set to last for a matter of weeks, involves the Royal Air Force providing air-to-air refueling of Saudi planes on 'defensive' missions.
The move is aimed at countering Houthi attacks that have targeted Saudi Arabia, including a recent missile strike on Riyadh and a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Houthis have also declared a blockade on Saudi-linked vessels and oil facilities inside the kingdom, the world's top oil exporter.
Burnham stated that Britain is 'acting to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region' by keeping oil pathways open. He emphasized that the UK will work with partners to support regional stability, protect civilians, and ensure humanitarian access.
