UK Sanctions Target Russia's LNG Shipping Network
UK sanctions have expanded to target Russia's emerging liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping network, with eight vessels linked to Russian gas exports blacklisted. This move signals growing Western scrutiny of Russia's LNG shipping activities as Moscow seeks new revenue streams.
The UK has added three newly delivered ice-class carriers tied to Novatek, a major Russian LNG producer, to the blacklist. The sanctions package also includes five other vessels already subject to previous restrictions. These blacklisted ships are now prohibited from entering or operating in British waters and are subject to asset freezes.
Notably, London has simultaneously extended limited waivers for Sakhalin-2 LNG shipments to Japan and South Korea through March 2028. This exception allows these countries to continue receiving gas supplies from the Russian-controlled project, which is a significant source of LNG exports.
