UK Sends RAF Refuelling Plane to Saudi Arabia Amid Rising Fuel Prices
The UK government has announced that it will provide military support to Saudi Arabia by sending an RAF refuelling plane, known as the Voyager, to the region. The move aims to prevent further escalation in the Red Sea, a crucial corridor for oil shipments, and is intended to help contain rising fuel prices. According to Defence Minister Luke Pollard, the deployment is necessary to stop 'further escalation' within the Red Sea, which could risk international crude supplies.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world's oil passes, has already been targeted by Iran and Yemeni Houthis, leading to a significant increase in energy prices. The government claims that the UK mission will be used only to assist Saudi jets defending against Houthi attacks, not those carrying out strikes in Yemen.
Pollard stated that providing British military support to Saudi Arabia 'is the morally right thing to do' and that it is necessary to 'deliver de-escalation' in the region. The use of the Voyager tanker is expected to start within days and will be time-limited, with officials indicating it could last for 'weeks'. The deployment comes as part of a larger effort by the UK to reduce living costs.
