UK Slams Brakes on Russian LNG Operations with New Sanctions
The UK has announced further sanctions on Russia in response to its increased aggression against Ukraine. The new measures target Russia's newest fleet of ARC7 LNG tankers, which are being delivered from the Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex. Three of these vessels, Aleksey Kosygin, Konstantin Posiet, and Pyotr Stolypin, were delivered this year or last year, with a capacity to hold over 172,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office stated that the new sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Russia ahead of the coming winter season. Lord Wood, Minister for Europe, noted that Russia has increased its aggression against Ukraine in recent months, firing over 3,100 jet-powered drones in September and conducting sham elections in occupied areas.
The UK asserts that international sanctions have already cost Russia nearly $500 billion in funding while saying the pressure must be maintained. The new package also includes three older LNG carriers and a small product tanker used for support and bunkering. Additionally, 23 individuals and entities involved in other elements are being listed, with eight accused of detaining and ill-treating Ukrainian civilians.
