Ukraine Black Sea Port Calls Suspended Amid Russian Attacks
Major shipping companies have suspended operations at key Ukrainian Black Sea terminals due to intensified Russian attacks on the coast. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have halted service in Chornomorsk, one of Ukraine's three main deep-water terminals.
The recent missile strikes and drone attacks in the Odesa region have significantly increased operational risks and threats to personnel and property safety, according to a statement from Hapag-Lloyd.
Despite this pause, Ukrainian markets continue to receive service via land routes through Poland and Romania. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sibiga, highlighted the importance of the harvest period after no ships were recorded arriving in the Black Sea corridor on July 22.
The escalation in the region has led to rising global wheat prices, as Ukraine is one of the world's major exporters of corn, wheat, rapeseed, sunflower seed, and vegetable oil. About 90 percent of raw commodities pass through port complexes near Odessa and its adjacent coast.
