Ukraine Buckwheat Prices Soar Amid Reduced Harvests and Increased Demand
Ukraine's buckwheat market is facing pressure due to reduced stocks and increased demand, leading to higher prices. The country has a domestic need of 95 thousand tons of buckwheat, but farmers expect to harvest only 112.2 thousand tons in the 2026-2027 season, resulting in a decrease of almost a third compared to last season.
The reduced area of sowing is a key factor behind this trend. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, only 48.6 thousand hectares have been allocated for buckwheat, which is 18% less than last year's 59 thousand hectares. This has led to a projected gross harvest of 62.2 thousand tons, which is 12% less than in the previous season.
The average yield per hectare remains virtually at last year's level, but the increased demand for buckwheat ahead of winter has shifted part of the future demand to the beginning of the season. This has further reduced the available volumes of product in the market.
